Among their best-known models is, for example, Baofeng UV-5R, which has higher power but its use is not completely legal—though it’s used by radio amateurs. This pair of radios with the model designation Baofeng BF-88E is, on the other hand, completely legal to use thanks to its 0.5 W power and freely available transmission bands.

We decided to order these radios and test them.

The process is via the AliExpress mobile app, where most people shop. There are two key things: don’t use Buy now and enter the coupon only in the order summary, in the field Promo code. After you click Pay now, you won’t be able to add it.

1. Copy the code and click Use discountIn our article, copy the coupon and click the button GET DISCOUNT. The link will take you directly to the product in the AliExpress app.
2. Use Add to cart instead of Buy nowOn the product card, scroll down and tap Add to cart. Don’t use the Buy now button—you’ll skip the cart, and later you won’t have anywhere to enter the coupon. Before that, double-check the variant: the color, the version, and whether it ships from an EU warehouse.
3. Through the cart, go to CheckoutA pop-up will appear: Added to cart! — tap Check it out in it. If it disappeared, open the cart with the icon at the bottom right. In the cart, check the product and quantity, then click the red Checkout. Only the items marked with the red ring will be applied.
4. Enter your address and card, then look for Promo codeIn the order summary, first fill in the delivery address and payment card at the top. Below them there’s a line Promo code — expand it with the arrow on the right.

   

5. Paste the code and confirm ApplyIn the field Promo code paste the copied code and click the black Apply. The code is case-sensitive and must not contain spaces.

   

6. Check the savings and payIn the Summary expand the line Saved — you’ll see the applied coupon there as AliExpress coupons/codes. Only when Total is really lower, click Pay now.

   

Apply the discount already at the order summary. After you click Pay now, you can no longer add a coupon. If Apply shows an error, the code has either expired, doesn’t apply to your items, or the order doesn’t meet the minimum amount.

The Store Coupon also goes in the same field. — a coupon from the seller itself, which isn’t always available and changes from day to day. AliExpress coupons can’t be combined, so try both and go with the one that gives you more. Coins are added automatically.

Inside the package you’ll find a microphone, as well as a pair of chargers

In a simple package, you’ll get in addition to the two radios Baofeng BF-88E also a pair of chargers with a USB-A connector, a pair of headphones with a microphone, a plastic clip, an English paper manual, and also a handy string for mounting.

The radio is made entirely of plastic, and for a price under €25 we can say their quality is decent. On the top side there are potentiometers for turning the device on and for adjusting the current band.

Right after unpacking and turning on the radio, everything worked and they communicated with each other. So the operation is simple and intuitive—even for complete beginners. If you’re looking for practical radios that are mainly usable legally, for example for skiing or airsoft, the Baofeng BF-88E are a great choice, since one device costs about less than €11.

Pocket-friendly compact device

The radio weighs just 140 grams, including the battery inside; the dimensions are exactly 170 x 55 x 35 mm. The seller even states that the radios have CE certification and also a PMR test report.

Two radios and the PMR band

Among their biggest advantages are high-quality workmanship, easy operation, and excellent sound and microphones. The radios work in the UHF band (UHF 446: 446.00625 – 446.19375 MHz) and can use a total of up to 16 channels. Using software, the radios can be programmed, or rather the bands can be programmed.

PMR radios, often called walkie-talkies, work at 446 MHz, have 8 channels (newer models up to 16 channels), and a transmission power of 500 mW (0.5 W), while the PMR transmission wavelength is 70 cm. PMR walkie-talkie radios are ideal for airsoft, sports activities, and even for quarantine.

1500 mAh battery

For power they use a 1500 mAh Li-ion battery, which is of course rechargeable and, together with an energy-saving mode, offers an extremely long operating time without needing to recharge.

The battery can be slid out from the back side of the radio.
