The company Meta, which also runs the Messenger messaging app, is having problems with proper functioning. This is nothing new and the situation has been ongoing for many users for several days to weeks. In today’s article, we’ll look at what steps you can take to eliminate these problems on your device.

Facebook Messenger has a problem

A large number of users are complaining about a critical issue with the Messenger app after the latest update labeled V395.0.0.10.75. As suggested by reviews on the Google Play store, the app won’t launch and gets stuck on a white screen with Meta’s logo. Some users, however, can open the app, but they don’t get current notifications or chat headers.

The issue affects only the Messeger app and doesn’t apply to the Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp apps. However, if you’re experiencing a similar problem on these apps too, you can take similar steps for the related apps as well.

Check system updates

As a first step you can take, check whether a system update is available. The Messenger app directly prompted some users to do this. These are improvements to the Android system itself, its security packages, or the MIUI interface. On Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO smartphones, you can do this in Settings, under About phone.

Try deleting the Messenger app data

If your smartphone isn’t offering a system update or a UI update, you need to focus on the app itself. Deleting the data of the Messenger app may help your problem. Go to Settings, then the Apps folder, then the App management subfolder, and find the problematic Messenger app.

In this menu, you have the option to Clear data. Choose to clear the cache first and then also delete all app data. This can help.

Alternative app version from APK Mirror

Still having problems? In that case, you can try uninstalling your Messenger app that you installed from the Google Play store. There’s a chance to install an alternative .apk file from a third-party website, such as APK Mirror.

Just choose an even older package labeled V394.0.0.15.72, i.e., before the problematic update. The file you can find here, but don’t forget that you need to allow installing apps from unknown sources in your smartphone settings.

Know Facebook Lite?

The last tip to solve your problems is to use a lighter version of the Facebook app, labeled Facebook Lite. This app is slower and doesn’t include all functions, such as chat headers, but it has Messenger built in directly in the app environment and will run quite smoothly even on less powerful devices.

So this could be a temporary fix until Meta releases a patch update for the full-featured Messenger app. This lightweight app has good ratings and you can find it directly in the Google Play store.
