China is entering the graphics card market. It is determined to compete with Nvidia or AMD

The graphics card market is very important, and right away for several technology segments. And the shortage of these components from trusted manufacturers can cause significant problems for both companies and users. Now, China is preparing to compete in this market with its own products as well.

Competition for Nvidia and AMD is coming from China

The days when Chinese products only copied their Western rivals in electronics with a delay are definitely behind us. Today, it no longer makes sense to question or underestimate this tech powerhouse—and that also applies to the current entry into the graphics card market.

Let’s start, though, with the introduction. The Chinese company Biren Technology, about which we’ll probably hear more and more, has announced its series of new graphics cards. At least on paper, according to the technical specifications, they look surprisingly competitive.

If we look at it in the context of competition, there’s no doubt that the manufacturer wants to compete with—and even surpass—giants like Nvidia or AMD with its models.

A graphics chip faster than Nvidia Ampere

The graphics chip you can see in the photo is the BR100 model, and it’s the flagship from Biren Technology. This chip is made by TSMC using its 7 nm production lithography process (2.5D CoWoS photolithography). Even the manufacturing process hints that it will be a competitive GPU, though it will also deliver reasonable power consumption.

Let’s, however, dive into the internals. The chip contains at least 77 billion transistors (for comparison, the competing Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti offers at least 28.3 billion transistors). It also includes 64 GB of HBM2e VRAM, with a maximum bandwidth of 2.3 Gbps. The setup also features a PCI Express 5.0 interface.

The fact is that, according to the manufacturer, this graphics processor delivers performance up to 1000 TFLOP (with 16-bit precision). These specs are truly impressive, but it seems like a model designed more for professional workstations or servers. Its target isn’t gaming devices for players or even standard users.

BR104 is the ideal model for your gaming setup

So if the flagship can handle much more, does the Chinese brand also offer a chip that’s suitable for gamers? The end customer should probably focus on, for example, the BR104 model. This chip is also made by TSMC using its 7 nm production lithography process. Inside, though, there’s 32 GB of HBM2e VRAM, and it delivers performance at 128 TFLOP.

The presence of Biren Technology in the graphics card technology market is definitely welcome. Not only in terms of competitive chip models, but especially considering the unavailability of flagship models from well-known brands like Nvidia or AMD. A new manufacturer can help fill the imaginary gap in supply, and its products may also support faster technological development.
