Singles Day, or Singles Day, originated in China in the 1990s as a playful anti-Valentine’s Day for those who are single. It wasn't until 2009 that Alibaba turned the idea into a huge 24-hour online festival, which gradually grew into a several-week shopping frenzy. Today, it’s the world’s biggest e-commerce holiday, with sales that surpass any other promotion.
For example, in 2018 Alibaba recorded an incredible turnover of USD 30.7 billion in a single day. A year later, the figure climbed to nearly 38 billion, and in 2021 a record was broken — as much as USD 84.5 billion during the expanded festival! That’s more than American Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.
Chinese e-commerce platforms once again confirmed their dominance in the global market last year. According to the analytics agency Syntun, total sales during 11.11 Singles Day 2024 across major online marketplaces such as Taobao, Tmall, JD.com and Pinduoduo reached approximately 1.44 trillion Chinese yuan (RMB). That’s an year-on-year increase of as much as 26.6 % compared with 2023 (source). Converted, that comes to roughly 196 billion USD or €187 billion.
The scale of China’s 11.11 is truly unmatched. Hundreds of millions of people take part in shopping — on Alibaba’s platform alone (Taobao), more than 532 million customers shopped on 11. 11. 2023. Logistics services have to handle an enormous number of parcels — during last year’s Singles Day, couriers delivered 639 million packages in China in a single day. At peak times, systems process hundreds of thousands of orders per second (Alibaba reported up to 583,000 orders per second in 2020.

A huge amount of goods also heads to Europe and the USA; among AliExpress’s biggest markets during 11.11 are, for example, Russia, Spain, the United States, France and Poland. Of course, more and more shoppers are also coming from Slovakia and the Czech Republic, who have discovered the magic of Chinese sales and buy electronics and gadgets for a fraction of regular prices.
