Compact design and our hands-on observations
At first glance, this looks like a very handy, space-saving piece. The VEVOR BS-004 weighs 5.5 kg and measures 202 x 291 x 267 mm, so it takes up relatively little space on your kitchen counter. It’s made of plastic that looks rather inexpensive, but there’s no rattling or loose parts anywhere. The manufacturer states a water tank capacity of 830 ml. From our practical testing, that means you can pour in roughly 2.5 standard cups of water at once, which is a very fast and convenient solution without needing to measure and pour water separately.
As for the noise level, according to the spec it reaches a maximum of 58 dB. In practice, this sound is absolutely acceptable and, just as the manufacturer promises, it resembles the typical gentle hum of a regular fridge—or an older freezer.
However, we did run into one detail that really annoyed us at night—the unit has a piercingly blinking blue LED indicator. If you place the ice maker in an open-plan living room connected to the kitchen where someone sleeps, this irritating “disco” in the dark will probably quickly earn a strip of black tape—or you’ll have to get used to unplugging the appliance regularly.
Ice-making speed and ice quality: patience required for the second or third batch
VEVOR makes so-called “bullet ice” (ice in the shape of a bullet), and right on the panel you can choose between two sizes. The ice maker is genuinely fast, and we confirm that it can spit out the first 7 pieces of ice in as little as 6 minutes if the initial water temperature is low enough. Sometimes the first batch took 8 minutes, but in our tests that didn’t bother us. It’s still better than waiting hours for ice from a freezer container. Plus, those first 7 ice pieces are already enough to chill a lukewarm drink in a 0.3 L cup.
But that’s where our key findings from testing come in. If you choose to make smaller ice (especially for size S—size L is also available), the first batch is usually thinner and more brittle. That’s logical, since the device’s internal cooling system still needs to “get going” and freeze to operating temperature. The second batch already looks noticeably better, and from the third batch onward you get exemplary, solid, chunky ice “bullets”.
The ice-making process is otherwise wonderfully effortless and fully automatic. The unit continuously produces new ice cubes until it detects that the internal basket (which holds 450 grams of ice) is completely full. At that point, the process intelligently pauses and waits for you to take some ice out. The manufacturer recommends draining the water from the tank if you know you won’t use the device for several days. If the tank runs out of water, VEVOR BS-004 will alert you with a blinking LED.
Runtime, maintenance, and overall assessment
It’s important to remember that the internal reservoir isn’t an active freezer. Still, we observed that the produced ice stays in the basket for about one hour (plus a few minutes) without starting to melt. After that, we recommend either consuming it right away in your drinks or simply taking it out and moving it to a regular freezer.
We especially appreciate the low-maintenance nature of the entire machine. After being left unused for a while, you don’t have to scrub it laboriously, because it offers an automatic cleaning cycle lasting 12 to 15 minutes that thoroughly flushes the inside. For convenient access to the ice, the manufacturer also includes a handy ice scoop directly in the package.
