Reader Marek’s experience: This is how the Chinese version works for us

Marek ordered the Honor Magic 8 Pro Air through our offer. After a few weeks of use, he sent us a detailed review and his own photos via messages on our Facebook page. The phone compares to his previous Vivo X100 Pro:

The phone is compact, fits well in the hand, has a bright display, and great haptic feedback. Compared to the Vivo X100 Pro, it’s much more compact, lighter, and easier to handle. The Vivo, on the other hand, has better cameras—and to my surprise, after two years it still has better battery life on a single charge.

Pros: great size, bright display, fast with no lags, and very responsive, amazing price versus European competition, Slovak language.

Cons: Even though the system is in Slovak, during the installation of various apps it asks you in Chinese, so I have no idea what it says there. The Honor App Market is also in Chinese and can’t be uninstalled. There are many pre-installed useless apps in Chinese that the system hasn’t translated. A 5500 mAh battery with a 5.3″ display and the latest chipset doesn’t have the kind of endurance you’d expect like with a Vivo after two years—this could easily have been a two-day phone, but it lasts a maximum of 1.3 days, and I’m not even playing games, just watching videos and making calls. The speakers are below average—I was expecting more.

The photos are beautiful, with plenty of detail and, most importantly, very close to reality in terms of color. When the light drops, the quality goes down, and in a darker scene it takes a moment for the phone to capture the photo—if the subject or the phone moves, the photo is blurry. But when it does manage, everyone will be satisfied. Nobody buys this phone for the cameras, but for the size—and the cameras here are actually above standard for that. After unboxing, I was surprised that the camera module is much bigger in real life and protrudes from the body by almost the thickness of the phone. I recommend an aramid case that doesn’t have a sharp edge, just a curve—the problem is solved, and the phone keeps its compact dimensions.

Marek’s experience boils down to two practical points: the Chinese version already offers Slovak, but you’ll still find untranslated text in pre-installed Chinese apps and in the Honor App Market. And because of the prominent camera module, it’s worth ordering the thin case as well.

Ultra-thin yet durable

Honor Magic 8 Pro Air measures exactly 150.5 × 71.9 × 6.1 mm and weighs only 155 g. Those are the dimensions that many people are looking for today in a compact smartphone. Still, you get a full-flagship setup, stereo speakers, and even support for Nano-SIM + Nano-SIM. There’s also IP68/IP69 certification, so water and dust aren’t an issue.

There are four color options available—Shadow Black (black), Feather White (white), Fairy Purple (purple), and Light Orange (orange). The frame is made of an aluminum alloy, and the back is glass, while the camera module is elegantly integrated into the back “visor” design.

6.31″ LTPO OLED with top-tier brightness

The display has a 6.31-inch diagonal and it’s a LTPO OLED panel with a resolution of 1216 × 2640 px and a refresh rate of 1 – 120 Hz. The panel supports 1 billion colors, Dolby Vision and HDR Vivid, and its maximum local brightness reaches up to 6000 nits. That’s a value you’ll appreciate especially in direct sunlight.

It also includes an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader and PWM dimming at 4320 Hz. The bezels around the display are extremely thin, so even with a smaller diagonal the screen still looks modern and premium.

Flagship performance Dimensity 9500

Performance is handled by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 made with a 3 nm process. It’s an eight-core chip with a C1-Ultra core boosted up to 4.21 GHz and an Arm G1-Ultra GPU. Paired with LPDDR5X RAM up to 16 GB and UFS 4.1 storage up to 1 TB, this is a full flagship configuration.

The smartphone runs on MagicOS 10 built on Android 16. Of course, you also get WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, full navigation systems, and stereo speakers. This isn’t some “lightweight” model—its feature set is at the top-tier level.

Triple camera with a periscope lens

On the back there’s a triple camera setup: 50 MP + 64 MP + 50 MP. The main sensor has a 1/1.3″ size, f/1.6 aperture, and optical stabilization (OIS). The periscope telephoto offers 64 MP resolution, 3.2× optical zoom, and also OIS. The 50 MP ultra-wide sensor with a 112° field of view can also act as a macro camera.

The front camera is 50 MP and supports 4K video. The rear setup handles 4K at 60 fps, 10-bit video, and HDR. Considering the device size, this is an exceptionally ambitious camera package.

5500 mAh battery in a 6.1 mm body

One of the biggest highlights is the 5500 mAh Si/C battery with a silicon-carbon anode. Combined with an energy-saving LTPO display and a 3 nm chip, it promises very solid battery life. Charging reaches 80 W wired and 50 W wireless, and reverse charging is also included.

Honestly, with a thickness of 6.1 mm, we’d expect a battery around 4000 mAh. But Honor has proven that even an ultra-thin smartphone can deliver capacity comparable to classic flagship models.
