Red Magic 5S officially: 144 Hz AMOLED display, improved cooling system, but only Snapdragon 865

The company Nubia yesterday at a conference officially unveiled the long-awaited gaming smartphone Red Magic 5S. It comes with many great features and specifications, but Snapdragon 865 Plus was ultimately not included. Even though its competitors have already used it or will use it soon, Nubia decided to stick with the classic Snapdragon 865.

The phone, however, doesn’t lack a great design or a refined cooling solution for the most demanding tasks.

Upgraded cooling system

The cooling system has also seen a major change—it includes silver tubes nicknamed Ice Age (the Ice Age), along with a glass nano silver back.

The biggest advantage is the use of silver over the competition, which uses copper. Silver offers much better cooling, as well as improved liquid or airflow flow. Nubia states that the cooling air duct is up to 56% larger compared to the previous generation Red Magic 3S.

Red Magic 5S also includes a small cooling fan with a lifespan of 30,000 hours and a speed of 15,000 RPM.

Another notable upgrade is improved performance of the graphics chip. Nubia developed this technology specifically for their gaming smartphone. It will ensure smooth gameplay without any stutters or fps drops. To use this technology, you’ll need to use additional accessories in the form of a new cooling fan.

The new cooling fan is called Ice Wind Cooling Box, and the smartphone cools itself when needed using self-freezing. Nubia says that this cooling helps increase cooling efficiency by up to 56%, while the device temperature drops to as low as 25 °C. The freezing process takes 10 minutes at 80% humidity and a room temperature of 10 °C.

The add-on fan also features a 3.5 mm audio jack input and supports 30 W fast charging as well.

Brutal specifications

Red Magic 5S will offer a 6.65″ AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution. The display also has TUV Rheinland certification along with a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz and a sampling rate of 240 Hz, which can reach up to 320 Hz.

The Snapdragon 865 processor from Qualcomm is paired with 8 GB, 12 GB, or 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of internal storage of the UFS 3.1 type.

Three cameras and fast 55 W charging

On the back of the Red Magic 5S, there are three cameras like those found on Red Magic 5G. The primary camera is a 64MPx IMX686 sensor from Sony, supported by an ultrawide lens with 8 MPx resolution and a macro sensor with 2 MPx resolution.

The camera also includes features like OIS, PDAF, and a super night scene mode. The front selfie camera has a resolution of 8MPx.

The smartphone comes with an upgraded version of Red Magic OS, based on Android 10, bringing new features for versatile use and support for low-latency wireless image projection.

There is also DTS X Ultra sound, a 3.5 mm audio jack connector, capacitive “trigger” buttons, Wi-Fi 6, an under-display fingerprint sensor and dual-band GPS. The phone has a 4500 mAh battery with support for fast 55 W fast charging.

Price and availability of Red Magic 5S

Red Magic 5S will be sold in 3 configurations:

8GB RAM + 128GB ROM = 3799 Chinese yuan (543 USD / 463 EUR)

12GB RAM + 256GB ROM = 4399 Chinese yuan (628 USD / 536 EUR)

16GB RAM + 256GB ROM = 4999 Chinese yuan (714 USD / 609 EUR)

Interested buyers will be able to choose from two color variants—red-turquoise and silver.

For now, Red Magic 5S is already available for pre-order, with sales starting August 1st in the official Nubia e-shop, local stores, and on JD.com.
