Snapdragon 865+ officially: Brutal performance, 3 GHz core, support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2

At the Snapdragon Tech Summit event in 2019, the US company Qualcomm unveiled its flagship chipset designed for upcoming TOP models, the Snapdragon 865. Now we’ve finally got the better-equipped variant, known as the Snapdragon 865+.

It has just secured its standard position in flagship models from the current year. In terms of performance, it beats its relentless competition in the form of Exynos 990, Kirin 990, or MediaTek Dimensity 1000L chipsets.

It’s also well known from smartphones such as OnePlus 8, Xiaomi Mi 10, and certain variants of the Samsung Galaxy S20 model line.

Snapdragon 865+ is ready to show its power

In the middle of the year, the US giant has prepared an upgraded version of the processor for us: the Snapdragon 865+. It will try to prove who the king is, powering the best Android phones.

The company did the same last year with the Snapdragon 855, or rather the Snapdragon 821 back in 2016. What we want to say is that a few processor versions with the “plus” label already existed, of course.

While Snapdragon 865 is currently powering more than 140 different models, the “plus” version will be reserved for upcoming flagship devices.

Snapdragon 865+ consists of one performance 3.09 GHz Kryo 585 Prime core, combined with a trio of 2.42 GHz Kryo 585 Gold cores and a quartet of 1.8 GHz Kryo 585 Silver cores. The chip is also equipped with an excellent graphics accelerator, the Adreno 650.

The highest clock speed Qualcomm has ever used

For comparison, the clock speed of the most powerful core in the case of the Snapdragon 855+ was 2,96 GHz. 3,09 GHz is therefore a record, because mobile processors from Qualcomm have not reached such a frequency so far.

Even though the graphics accelerator won’t achieve as great results as Apple A13, it’s still an almost perfect chip for smartphones in the gaming segment. The processors mentioned above—Exynos 990, Kirin 990, and Dimensity 1000L—are on the other hand a little worse in terms of graphics performance.

Snapdragon 865+ has expanded connectivity options

We’re slowly getting to the new, great advantages of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 update. One example is the FastConnect 6900 system, delivering excellent connectivity for WiFi networks and Bluetooth technology.

So you get WiFi 6E, reaching a new 6 GHz frequency, and modern Bluetooth 5.2. WiFi connection speeds can reach up to an impressive 3.6 Gb/s, which—according to the chip maker itself—is the fastest in the entire industry.

Mobile gamers will also appreciate the integration of Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming, along with support for the latest fifth-generation networks (5G) and “ultra-intuitive” artificial intelligence (AI).

Rendering of graphics scenes should run as well as on a classic desktop computer. The highest frame rate has been boosted to an amazing 144 fps, giving you the chance to fully take advantage of increasingly common 144 Hz displays. Comfortable gaming is also enabled thanks to support for 10-bit HDR.

Charging the battery is possible thanks to the Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ technology. The chipset itself is built using the second generation of the 7 nm DUV (N7P) manufacturing process according to Taiwan’s TSMC.

We know two models in which the newly introduced chipset will be used

In the article, you’ll also find information about the number of points in the AnTuTu Benchmark. They are reportedly moving, with a lot of room to spare, above the magic threshold of 600 000 points. You can allegedly look forward to it on several devices with this processor as early as the third quarter of 2020.
