Vivo X50 Pro showcases its massive main sensor with advanced gimbal stabilization

The Chinese Vivo is preparing a new smartphone Vivo X50 Pro, which is expected to be a higher mid-range model with a camera as its biggest highlight. It will feature a special sensor stabilization that will be up to 200% more effective than standard OIS.

The new Vivo X50 Pro should be something of a middle path between the X30 series and the flagship Nex 3S. That means compromises in performance, but on the other hand it will come with a top-tier camera.

Incredible image stabilization

If you’ve seen Vivo’s APEX concept smartphone lineup, you may have also caught the latest Vivo APEX 2020. It was supposed to be unveiled at CES, but since it was canceled, the concept remained on ice. It was meant to demonstrate the capabilities of the new stabilization, but the smartphone would still never be released for sale.

However, the Chinese company came with a commercial novelty in the form of the Vivo X50 Pro. It’s supposed to have gimbal-style sensor stabilization, meaning it will stabilize the image mechanically.

This feature is expected to be provided by the huge main 50 MPx ISOCELL GN1 sensor, which is even larger than the 108 MPx sensor used in Xiaomi Mi 10. Its size is exactly 1/1.3″, and the pixel size is 1.2μm.

There’s also a periscope sensor

Another specialty should be a periscope sensor located right at the very bottom of the camera module grouping. It should offer up to 5x optical zoom, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra or Xiaomi Mi 10. The numbers for digital zoom can also be very high—such as 50x or even 100x zoom.

The remaining two sensors will likely be more standard parts, such as an ultra-wide lens or a depth-of-field sensor.

More specifications

The drawing you can see below shows the entire smartphone and its design. It will be very thin, and it also suggests 5G connectivity. Compared with current pieces, thanks to the special camera grouping, we can spot a few differences that make it truly unique.

Not much is known about the rest of the hardware, but it will likely include a Exynos processor from Samsung (the Exynos 980 is included in Vivo X30). A Snapdragon 865 option is still possible as well.

However, the X series of smartphones is just a matter of the Chinese market. So we’ll see whether this—or a similar—smartphone will also come to the global market. Given the excellent stabilization, we’d definitely be happy. It’s said to be unveiled in China on June 1.
